Strong Towns Artesia Member Agreement (The "Don't Be a Jerk" Agreement)

The Strong Towns movement is a grassroots effort to transform the way we build our cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Thousands of people across the world are working together to make their communities stronger.

By becoming a member of Strong Towns Artesia, you’re joining a collective effort to improve our city. Together, we will advocate for smarter development, safer streets, and a more sustainable future for Artesia.

With this agreement, we are inviting you to be an active and respectful member of the Strong Towns Artesia community. Here’s what we need from you to make sure we’re all aligned in our efforts:

  1. Commitment to Support
    We ask for just $1 a month to show that you’re serious about our work. While you’re welcome to give more, this small contribution ensures that everyone can participate without financial strain. It demonstrates that we’re all in this together, regardless of financial situation.

  2. Stay Engaged & Report Back
    We ask all members to stay engaged with our efforts and check in quarterly to keep us updated on your participation. One of these check-ins will be a more detailed survey. Your input helps us understand how we’re progressing and how we can improve as a community.

  3. Don’t Be a Jerk
    This is crucial. By joining Strong Towns Artesia, you are representing the values of the movement. We expect all members to act with respect, kindness, and integrity in all interactions.

At Strong Towns Artesia:

  • Stay Above the Partisan Fray
    While we respect your personal political views, Strong Towns Artesia focuses on local issues related to sustainable development, transportation, and community-building. We don’t take positions on national or global issues like abortion, guns, or international conflicts. Our focus is on improving Artesia.

  • Be Kind, Even When It’s Hard
    Our goal is to reform systems and change minds, not to attack individuals. We approach our work with empathy and respect, even when we disagree. The goal is to challenge the status quo, not to demonize people.

  • Be Polite and Professional
    Our communications may challenge people’s beliefs, but they should always be respectful. We do not use offensive language, curse words, or inappropriate imagery. Our tone is always polite and safe for work.

  • Be Trustworthy
    We build trust by being transparent, honest, and clear in all our communications. We don’t mislead, deceive, or undermine our credibility. We believe in long-term change, and that starts with being honest and consistent in our actions.
